I've got a few of those non human companions running around my place too :) Three cats in my case...the third was a failed fostering attempt :)

The longest I have been able to keep an orchid plant alive is 1.5 months. Trying not to water more than once weekly...

Someone gifted Orchid last December. It was nearly dying. I went to Youtube University to save it and learned about hydroponics. I lost the long stem but it recovered amazingly well. It has a long thick shiny leaves like Snoopy ears.

Yeah, it was super easy to make friends in college. Friendships change and sometimes disappear as ppl get older, couple up, and start their own families. Thankfully, we discovered ATC, which brings ppl looking for friendship closer together!

Happy to see another El Cerrito resident who enjoys our local wildlife! During 3-1/2 years of COVID i taught nature journaling to local teens and adults every week to nurture our curiosity and appreciation for nature and ecology, seeing what wanders into our community, be it plant or animal. Connecting with nature is healing, calming, and exciting! I appreciate that you care about dogs; I had dogs for 29 years and now have a rescued granddog and great granddog I get to spend time with. Some of my dearest friends live far away and I'm fortunate that some longtime friends are still in the Bay Area. I look forward to meeting new people of all generations, young, middle, and elder, to keep broadening my horizons and learning. I'll ping you for a tea meet up.

I love squirrels. They come to the yard to pick peaches every summer. My parents get infuriated over that, but if I was a squirrel, I would come pick peaches as well. It's difficult surviving out there!

@TheMoose1234 back in November 2022, I was trying to rescue a GSD from my neighborhood with several other neighbors. I met another dog rescuer in the process who was trying to find a home for a little mouse she had rescued recently. She worked next to East Bay Vivarium, and this little feeder mouse made a run for life. I couldn't say no, so I ended up taking the mouse. The little guy still runs on his wheel every single night!

By the way, the dog was also rescued and later adopted by one of the neighbors. I see him walking with his new family regularly

@plumeriapassion I used to watch the squirrels getting peaches and apples from my parents' yard. It didn't bother us to share some of the fruits. They were more than we could eat although the squirrels like to take random bites than just abandon the fruits. Now I actually have a squirrels feeder outside in addition to multiple fruit trees. I think the squirrels' biggest worry is the aggressive crows and speeding cars

We had a roof rat invasion last year for a good six months, and I fiercely opposed killing the rats. Against the wishes of my parents, I rehomed eight rats to Lake Elizabeth.

@plumeriapassion I don't really know how old the mouse is. I got him in Nov. 2022. He was already full grown. He is at least 1.5 years old. I believe they live about 3 years

@plumeriapassion super nice of you to save the rats' lives. There are a lot of gophers here in people's gardens. Some people actually poison them or use traps to kill them. I know they make a mess in the yard but that's where they live, underground.
